We Asked 5 Singaporeans to Show Us the One Pair They'd Never Sell and Here's What They Said

There is a question that makes every sneakerhead in Singapore pause for just a beat too long. Not "how much did you pay for those" though that one stings too, but the quieter, more personal version: if you had to let everything go tomorrow, which pair stays? We put that to five people from different corners of the island. What came back had almost nothing to do with hype.

Rashidah, 34. Nurse. Bedok.

Twelve-hour shifts will tell you very quickly whether a shoe is lying to you. Rashidah walked into SneakSurf at Tampines Mall on a weekday afternoon, tried on the On Cloud 6 in Pearl White, and stood on the spot for almost a full minute. "I kept waiting for it to feel weird," she says. "But nothing. My feet just went quiet. "These taught me I'd been wearing the wrong shoes my whole life," she says. You don't sell something that changed something like that.

Wen Bin, 52. Interior contractor. Serangoon.

He is not on Instagram. He has never heard of StockX. He walked past SneakSurf at Bugis Junction one afternoon, saw the adidas Originals Samba OG in Black Gum through the window, came in and the staff greeted him like anyone else. He tried them on, said, “Aiyah, very comfortable leh,” and bought them on the spot. He wears them every Sunday, his only day off, usually to dim sum near his flat in Geylang. One Sunday, a younger guy at the next table recognised the colourway and nodded, “Nice shoe.” Wen Bin just smiled and replied, “Thank you,” he told us. “I just know these make me feel like I’m going somewhere on my day off.” That might be the best reason we’ve heard all year.

Cheryl, 27. Graphic designer. Tiong Bahru.

She walked past SneakSurf at Suntec three times in the same afternoon before going in on the fourth pass. The ASICS GEL-1130 in Sepia Brown Driftwood had been watching her from the display the entire time. She had just received her first real freelance cheque, not life-changing, but hers and she bought them the way you buy something when you've finally earned the right to want it. She wore them to every client meeting that year. One client asked about them mid-presentation, derailed the whole conversation for ten minutes, and eventually became a long-term collaborator. She knows it's a stretch to credit ASICS for her career. She credits them anyway.

Ryan, 23. Full-time NS. About to start university. Yishun.

The Salomon XT-6 Advanced in Black Phantom lives in a separate cupboard from everything else in his room. He got it through SneakSurf after a restock notification he'd been saving for two months finally fired at 11pm on a Tuesday. He was already in bed. He bought it from his phone in the dark, then lay awake for forty minutes unsure if the order had gone through. It had. "Before this, my friends thought I was just spending money on shoes," he says. "After this, they started asking me for advice." The XT-6 is that kind of shoe, the one that signals fluency to other people who speak the language. The story of the Tuesday night is worth more than the margin.

Janet, 41. Secondary school teacher. Jurong West.

She bought her first pair of grown-up sneakers eighteen months ago, purely for practical reasons, a new school dress code, six hours a day on her feet, a colleague who pointed her toward SneakSurf. She left with the On Cloud 6 in Glacier White, wore them the following Monday, and received three compliments from students before 9am, which she found slightly alarming. What she didn't expect was everything that followed. She started walking to the MRT instead of taking the feeder bus. Then walking home some evenings. Then she entered her school's 5km sports day fun run and finished fifth in her age category, a fact she mentions with the careful understatement of someone who is quietly very pleased. The Cloud 6 is still on rotation. "They're the reason I move differently now," she says. Some things aren't for sale.
